The gym

There's something about the gym, that to a man, feels very manly. All those bro's with bulging biceps who've been going since they were 3 years old and know everything there is to know like the back of their hand.

Little known fact, I can count the amount of times I've been to a gym on one hand. I never really saw the point as a kid, instead spending hours playing football. In my early adult life I had some physical issues which I let put a ceiling on what I could do. And for the past couple years I started taking getting stronger more seriously. As in, I actually did something. But I did these workouts at home, because that's far easier.

I'm a big fan of the idea of bodyweight exercises. They're basically compound exercises but with minimal equipment, most can be performed pretty much anywhere. Push ups and pull ups are my go to staple, but I've definitely plateaued in those the past year or so. So a week ago I signed up for the gym, and tomorrow is my induction.

I feel a bit nervous, honestly. I'm not in bad shape, but I'm not in gym bro shape. I don't really know how the exercise equipment works (here's hoping the induction will help with that) and I don't know how the new exercises I'll be doing work (though I've got some videos to watch on my commute in a sec). I also haven't practiced putting on a deep manly voice like I imagine all those manly men have at the gym have.

But I'm excited too. Excited to set a new habit in place, and to start getting stronger. I'll be doing the Strong Lifts 5x5 program, which is simply 5 different compound exercises done 5 times each session. It should help build up a good foundation to work from moving forwards.

2019 is the year of health for me, so let's get to it.
